This is what emerges from research published in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, conducted by Cristian Balducci, professor at the Department of Quality of Life Studies at the in cooperation with Prof. Paola Spagnoli of the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli” and Dr. Luca Menghini of the University of Trento, University of Bologna (Rimini Campus).

Professor Balducci explains: “The dysfunctional attitude seen in workaholics may indicate high levels of daily stress and that may be the reason these people are at greater risk of fatigue and cardiovascular problems. The mood can easily affect that of your colleagues and co-workers. This poses a risk that organizations should take seriously, intervening to discourage behaviors that contribute to work overload.”

Addiction to work People with work addiction have long been recognized as having an excessive and obsessive work schedule. This is a real impulse that negatively affects health, psychological well-being, and relationships with family and friends.

Many studies show that people with work experience usually experience negative moods, often accompanied by negative emotions such as hostility, anxiety, and guilt when they are unable to work as much as they want. On the other hand, there are conflicting ideas about the emotions these people experience when they are at work. Some studies show that people who experience working experience feelings of well-being and satisfaction during the workday, but other research shows that these positive feelings quickly turn into a widespread dysphoric state characterized by irritability and depression.

To unveil this facet, researchers enlisted 139 part-time employees predominantly engaged in office-based tasks for examination. The participants underwent initial evaluation via a psychological assessment to gauge their inclination towards work dependency. Subsequently, scholars delved into the employees’ work circumstances and their subjective assessment of workload through the employment of the “experience sampling method.” This technique involved the installation of an application on the participants’ mobile devices, enabling them to dispatch concise questionnaires at intervals of roughly 90 minutes, spanning from 9 am to 6 pm, across three workdays (specifically, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday).

According to Professor Balducci, “the statistics gathered show that numerous workers with numerous jobs on a regular basis have a worse situation than others.”So, it appears that this isn’t the case—in fact,, the data seem to suggest the opposite—that people who are accustomed to working enjoy their jobs more., as in other types of behavioral dependences and medicines, the original pleasure gives way. of a negative emotional state that afflicts a person indeed while at work.”

The results also show that, unlike other workers, the disabled, on average, maintain a worse mood throughout the day, without significant differences associated with the passage of time or a decrease in workload. Decreased sensory reactivity to external stimuli implies a prominent emotional overload, a phenomenon well recognized in other forms of addiction.

“This aspect,” points out Luca Menghini, a researcher at the University of Trento and the first author of the study, “may be due to the inability of the worker to control the investment of work, leading to a significant reduction in the experience of cutting and recovery, and integration corresponding to the tone of negative emotions.”

WOMEN AND WORK Another interesting result from the research is that of gender differences. The relationship between workaholism and poor mood was actually more pronounced in women than men, indicating women’s greater susceptibility to workaholism.

Scholars suggest that this may be due to the increasing role conflict experienced by working women, caught between an internal tendency to invest too much in their work and external pressures from gender expectations that are still deeply rooted in our culture.

DANGERS AND PREVENTIVE MEASURES These results warn about the dangers of occupational alcoholism. Work addiction can cause negative effects not only on relationships with family and friends, but also on physical and psychological well-being. So-called “overwork syndromes” can escalate to death from overwork – something unthinkable today.

“Professor Balducci underscores the necessity for business proprietors to adeptly communicate this issue to their workforce, steering clear of fostering a workplace ambiance that perpetuates overtime and weekend labor. Conversely, it is vital to advocate for reduction strategies, specialized training, conditioning, and supportive measures to cultivate an environment that dissuades extensive and unproductive labor commitments.”
